A $74.5 million modernization project at Eleanor Slater Hospital in Cranston, Rhode Island, has reached completion, upgrading an approximately 120,000-square-foot behavioral healthcare facility and replacing aging building infrastructure.
STV served as the owner’s project manager and provided program and construction management services for the Regan Building renovation. The completed work is intended to provide a safer, more resilient and more operationally efficient environment for patients and healthcare staff.
The project involved a major renovation of the six-story facility, including a gut renovation of multiple floors and replacement of core building systems.
Work included new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection infrastructure, as well as new elevators. The project team also installed upgraded security and information technology systems, audiovisual infrastructure, solar equipment and electric vehicle charging stations.
Architectural improvements included a new building envelope and roof, along with kitchen modifications and additional safety features intended to support patients and staff.
As construction progressed, STV coordinated with the State of Rhode Island, designers and contractors to incorporate additional infrastructure improvements while maintaining progress toward commissioning, activation and occupancy.
The completed Regan Building provides updated infrastructure for Eleanor Slater Hospital and supports the State’s ongoing investment in behavioral healthcare facilities and public infrastructure.
The project demonstrates the complexity of modernizing an operating healthcare asset, where building systems, security, safety and operational requirements must be addressed alongside architectural improvements. For owners managing aging healthcare facilities, the renovation also highlights the role of coordinated project management in integrating multiple infrastructure upgrades within a single capital project.
