Suffolk Breaks Ground on $750M NY Hospital Expansion

Caroline Raffetto

Suffolk has officially begun construction on a $750 million expansion of White Plains Hospital in New York’s Hudson Valley, according to a July 1 announcement. The Boston-based contractor will build a 10-story, 500,000-square-foot facility that will significantly increase the hospital’s capacity and surgical capabilities.

The expansion will raise the hospital’s licensed bed count from 292 to 436, ultimately delivering 240 private rooms, 144 of which are expected to open in 2028.

The new structure will also feature a full operating room floor with space for 10 advanced ORs and a doubling of the hospital’s emergency department, Suffolk noted.

To streamline construction, Suffolk will deploy its proprietary artificial intelligence-based steel tracking platform, Live Dimensions, from the design phase through to final delivery. The system was previously used in the South Shore University Hospital Pavilion Core & Shell project in Bay Shore, NY.

In addition, the team will utilize the NavVis handheld scanner to collect high-resolution spatial data, integrating the information with the Revizto cloud collaboration platform to ensure alignment across teams.

The $750 million investment reflects growing demand for modern healthcare infrastructure in the Hudson Valley region, where population growth and evolving patient expectations are putting pressure on older facilities.

By leveraging cutting-edge digital construction tools, Suffolk aims to reduce rework, improve accuracy, and streamline coordination across multiple project stakeholders.

“Suffolk is setting a new bar for integrating AI and digital collaboration in healthcare construction,” said a project team source. “These tools not only optimize performance but ensure that hospitals like White Plains are ready to meet 21st-century healthcare demands.”

Once completed in 2028, the expansion will position White Plains Hospital as one of the most advanced community hospitals in the region, with increased capacity to serve patients in both routine and emergency settings.
