A widened roadway designed to improve traffic flow and accommodate cyclists is now complete along County Road 210 in St. Johns County, Florida. Superior Construction recently joined county officials, including District 1 Commissioner Christian Whitehurst, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking completion of the project.
The work covers a 2.3-mile stretch between Greenbriar Road and Cimarrone Boulevard. St. Johns County selected Superior Construction in 2023 to deliver the project using a progressive design-build approach.
The expansion responds to congestion along the corridor, where residential development and growing school-related traffic had increased pressure on the previous two-lane road.
The project converted the existing two-lane highway into four divided lanes, separated by a 22-foot median. Four-foot-wide bike lanes were also added in both directions, alongside improvements at the Greenbriar Road intersection.
The roadway configuration is intended to improve traffic movement while providing dedicated space for cyclists. The additional lanes increase the corridor's road capacity, while the divided layout changes how opposing traffic flows through the area.
The upgraded route serves people travelling to work, schools and other destinations within the surrounding community.
The completion reflects coordination among Superior Construction, St. Johns County and the project's construction partners. The company credited its crews and project partners for delivering the work and thanked residents for their patience during construction.
The progressive design-build delivery method brought design and construction activities together under a coordinated project approach. The county selected Superior Construction for the work in 2023, although the company announcement did not disclose the project's total cost or a detailed construction schedule.
Road widening projects can help local governments respond to congestion created by population growth and development. For transportation owners and contractors, the County Road 210 project illustrates how roadway capacity improvements, median separation and dedicated cycling facilities can be combined within a single corridor upgrade.
