Construction Owners

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens has officially launched a $31 million expansion and renovation effort aimed at transforming the historic site into a more accessible and sustainable community destination. Turner Construction Company is managing the ambitious project, which balances modernization with a deep respect for the landmark’s heritage.

The plans include 18,000 square feet of new construction and renovation of 15,000 square feet of existing facilities. Key upgrades will introduce a fully accessible main entrance, modern HVAC systems, expanded parking, and enhanced educational and event spaces. Visitors will also benefit from a new café and a larger gift shop, designed to improve the overall guest experience.

Despite the scale of the construction, the Botanical Gardens will remain open to the public throughout the process. According to officials, special attention has been paid to construction sequencing and site logistics to ensure minimal disruption for visitors and ongoing operations.

“We are honored to help create a more accessible, sustainable, and enriching space for all who visit,” said Steven Perrigo, VP & Business Manager at Turner Construction Company. “The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens are a cornerstone of the community, and we’re proud to preserve their legacy while building for the future.”

Construction is expected to continue over the next two years, with completion anticipated in early 2027.

The expansion is part of a long-term vision to ensure the Botanical Gardens can serve the growing needs of the Western New York community. From educational programming to cultural events, the upgraded facility aims to attract new visitors while better accommodating returning guests.

This project also prioritizes environmental stewardship. The new systems are being designed with energy efficiency in mind, reflecting both the Botanical Gardens’ mission and Turner’s broader commitment to sustainable building practices.

Local leaders have praised the initiative, highlighting its potential to generate economic impact and solidify the Botanical Gardens' role as a year-round attraction. Once complete, the site is expected to draw increased tourism and host a wider range of community programming and events.

The expansion reflects a broader trend of investing in green and cultural infrastructure across New York State, ensuring that spaces like the Botanical Gardens continue to thrive for generations to come.
