A $29 million behavioral health facility in National City, California, has opened with expanded residential treatment and recuperative care capacity for the South Bay. Turner Construction delivered the project for the County of San Diego as part of an effort to consolidate substance use treatment and recovery services within a single facility.
The new Substance Use Residential & Treatment Services (SURTS) center provides 73 residential treatment beds along with 16 beds dedicated to recuperative care.
The facility includes 24 dormitory rooms, program and administrative spaces, exterior courtyards and upgraded kitchen and laundry facilities. The campus was designed to accommodate treatment and supportive services within one location.
The project team included Turner, Platt/Whitelaw Architects, trade partners and other project participants. County and state officials and representatives of the facility's future operator attended the opening ceremony.
The center is expected to serve approximately 500 people annually through its residential treatment program and an additional 167 people through recuperative care.
Services will include withdrawal management, medication management and care coordination. The combination of residential treatment and recuperative care is intended to provide multiple stages of support within the same campus.
The opening adds treatment capacity in the South Bay while providing updated spaces for patients, staff and program operations.
Healthcare and behavioral health construction increasingly requires facilities that combine clinical, residential and supportive functions while creating appropriate spaces for patients and staff.
For healthcare owners and contractors, the SURTS project demonstrates how a single campus can accommodate multiple care services, residential capacity and administrative functions. The addition of 89 total beds also expands the physical infrastructure available for behavioral health and recuperative care in the region.
