Turner Construction Company has announced that it has been awarded the contract for the Mann Middle School Whole Site Modernization project, reinforcing its long-standing partnership with the San Diego Unified School District and furthering its commitment to enhancing educational environments across the San Diego region.
The large-scale project, designed by Sprotte+Watson Architecture and Planning, will be delivered in multiple phases to minimize disruption to students and staff. The modernization will bring transformative improvements across the Mann Middle School campus, ensuring that the facilities meet the evolving needs of students, educators, and the broader school community.

Among the key improvements, Turner will oversee the renovation of existing Buildings 300, 400, and the 500 building, which houses the school’s auditorium. In addition, part of Building 200 will be carefully demolished, with the existing library preserved and a new expansion added. This addition will house updated restrooms and crucial support spaces, helping to modernize the learning environment and meet current educational standards.
A major element of the project is the demolition of the existing physical education building to make way for a brand-new PE locker building and gymnasium. This new sports facility will not only upgrade the school’s athletic amenities but also enhance accessibility, providing new accessible parking and improved pathways from Trojan Avenue for students, staff, and visitors.
Beyond the physical upgrades, the modernization will also focus on updating classrooms, including those for special education, and improving the auditorium and food service facilities. Comprehensive upgrades to site accessibility, technology infrastructure, and communication systems are planned, ensuring that the campus supports a robust and inclusive learning experience.
Construction is set to begin in early 2026, with a targeted completion date of early 2029, marking a significant multi-year effort to revitalize one of the district’s key middle schools.
Reflecting on the importance of the project, Fernando Delgado, K-14 Program Manager at Turner, said:
“We are honored to be entrusted once again by the San Diego Unified School District. Our team is excited to deliver a project that will have a lasting impact on students and the surrounding community. This effort exemplifies our commitment to building environments where learning can thrive.”
Turner Construction has built a strong reputation for its work in the K-12 and higher education sectors, regularly delivering projects that not only update physical spaces but also incorporate the latest design strategies to foster student engagement, safety, and well-being. This project at Mann Middle School continues that legacy, contributing to a broader vision of educational excellence across San Diego.
The Mann Middle School modernization is part of the San Diego Unified School District’s ongoing capital improvement initiatives, funded through local bond measures aimed at upgrading and maintaining school facilities throughout the district. Once completed, the upgraded campus is expected to serve as a model for modern middle school environments, aligning with best practices in educational design and providing students with the tools and spaces they need to succeed.
