Tutor Perini’s subsidiary Rudolph and Sletten has been awarded a $960 million contract to deliver the new UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, a transformative healthcare project that will expand pediatric care capacity in the Bay Area.
The new hospital will encompass 277,500 square feet across seven floors and a basement, offering cutting-edge medical facilities to support advanced treatment and research. Along with the main hospital, Rudolph and Sletten will also construct a multi-level parking garage and a rooftop helipad, ensuring faster emergency access. To make way for the development, three existing buildings will be demolished.
Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2025, with substantial completion expected in 2031, marking a multi-year effort to bring state-of-the-art healthcare infrastructure to Oakland.
The new hospital is designed not only to expand UCSF’s pediatric services but also to create a family-centered healing environment that prioritizes patient comfort, sustainability, and future adaptability. The facility is expected to include specialized treatment areas, upgraded surgical suites, and expanded intensive care units, while also integrating green building strategies to reduce energy use and environmental impact.
The project reflects UCSF’s long-term commitment to the East Bay community, where demand for pediatric healthcare continues to grow. The investment also represents a significant boost to Oakland’s economy, generating thousands of construction and trade jobs throughout the project timeline.
“This project is a cornerstone for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital’s future,” said a UCSF spokesperson. “It will provide the facilities and technology required to continue delivering world-class pediatric care while serving more families in the Bay Area and beyond.”
The hospital’s expansion is expected to serve tens of thousands of children annually, further strengthening UCSF’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading children’s healthcare providers.
With its track record of delivering complex healthcare facilities, Rudolph and Sletten brings decades of experience to the project. The company has previously completed high-profile projects across California, including academic medical centers, life sciences labs, and research hospitals.
The UCSF Benioff project in Oakland will be one of the largest healthcare construction initiatives in Northern California over the next decade, cementing Tutor Perini’s role as a major player in shaping the region’s healthcare infrastructure.
