The 7.6-mile project stretches along U.S. 90 from Loop 410 to State Highway 211 and is designed to improve roadway safety, reduce congestion and strengthen regional connectivity as traffic volumes continue to rise.

According to TxDOT, the expansion will convert the existing four-lane divided highway into a six-lane expressway with continuous frontage roads. The project also includes construction of a new flyover ramp connecting westbound U.S. 90 to northbound Loop 1604, along with significant intersection upgrades at Loop 1604, Montgomery Road and Hunt Lane.

Additional improvements include turnaround bridges at SH 211, Loop 1604 and Montgomery Road, a new roundabout at Ray Ellison Boulevard and Hunt Lane, and the installation of sidewalks, auxiliary lanes and roadway shoulders throughout the corridor.

"The U.S. 90 Expansion is more than a construction project. It’s an investment in San Antonio’s future," said TxDOT San Antonio District Engineer Charles Benavidez, P.E. "By enhancing safety and cutting commute times, we’re creating a safer and more connected transportation network that will improve quality of life for generations to come."

TxDOT projects that traffic along the corridor will nearly double by 2045, reaching an estimated 150,000 drivers per day. Officials say the expansion is necessary to accommodate growth in West Bexar County and surrounding areas while maintaining reliable travel times.

The $473 million project will be completed in two phases. Phase I, which covers improvements between Interstate 410 and Loop 1604, began this year and is expected to be completed by 2030. Phase II, extending from Loop 1604 to State Highway 211, is scheduled to begin in 2027 with completion anticipated by 2031.

Once finished, the upgraded corridor is expected to serve as a key transportation link for commuters, freight movement and future development on San Antonio’s rapidly growing west side.
