SAN ANGELO, Texas — September 15, 2025 — Drivers in San Angelo and the surrounding region should expect lane closures and possible delays as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) details 22 active construction projects across nine West Texas counties in its latest Highway Conditions Report.

The update provides detailed information for each project, including the location, type of condition, direction affected, the length of work zones, whether delays are expected, available detours, metro area status, and projected start and end dates.

Projects in Tom Green County

In Tom Green County, two projects are currently underway:

U.S. 87 (North and Southbound Lanes)

Construction impacts both directions of travel. Work is scheduled to continue through December 12, 2025, at 5 p.m. TxDOT advises drivers to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time on this heavily used corridor.

State Highway Loop 278 (Christoval Road)

Both northbound and southbound lanes are affected. Work is set to conclude on October 15, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. Local drivers may experience delays, particularly during peak commute hours.

Regional Overview

The Highway Conditions Report also covers ongoing work across several nearby counties:

  • Coke County – 1 project
  • Concho County – 2 projects
  • Crockett County – 11 projects, the highest number in the report
  • Edwards County – 2 projects
  • Glasscock County – 1 project
  • Irion County – 2 projects
  • Runnels County – 1 project
  • Sutton County – 1 project

In total, Crockett County accounts for half of the active projects, underscoring TxDOT’s significant investment in improving rural highways and critical transportation corridors in the region.

Why These Projects Matter

Highway construction in West Texas is not only about resurfacing roads but also about improving safety, extending the lifespan of key routes, and supporting economic activity. Routes such as U.S. 87 serve as vital connectors for commercial trucking, agriculture, and oil and gas operations.

TxDOT officials note that some projects involve road widening, resurfacing, and safety enhancements, while others focus on repairing or replacing aging infrastructure. Together, these improvements are aimed at reducing accident risks, cutting long-term maintenance costs, and providing more reliable travel for residents and businesses.

What Drivers Should Know

While delays are possible, TxDOT emphasizes that most projects are managed to minimize traffic disruptions. The report highlights where detours are available and encourages motorists to check conditions regularly.

Drivers are urged to:

  • Plan ahead and allow for extra travel time.
  • Stay alert for work crews and changing traffic patterns.
  • Obey posted speed limits in construction zones, where fines may be doubled.

This latest Highway Conditions Report reflects TxDOT’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and upgrading Texas highways. With 22 projects spread across nine counties, the improvements are part of a broader effort to keep pace with growth, ensure safety, and support regional mobility.
