U.S. Commerce Department Recognizes Baker for Signing the Million Women in Construction Community Pledge
At Baker Construction, our purpose is to build better structures and better lives. On May 21, we were proud to be recognized by the U.S. Commerce Department for signing the Million Women in Construction Community Pledge.
In signing the pledge, we are demonstrating our long-standing commitment to help more women build better lives for themselves and their families by finding meaningful careers in the construction industry.
At a time when our industry is hurting for people, helping more women blaze their trails in construction just makes sense. The fact is, construction holds the keys to a rewarding career that offers both purpose and the means to earn a good living for women. Here are some of the reasons why:
• Lots of job openings at all levels. The industry continues to experience a shortage of skilled and talented people. With projections of 400,000 new jobs by 2030, there is a tremendous need for people with all skill levels.
• Good pay. Construction also offers competitive salaries, providing women with the means to build a better life for themselves and their families. According to the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), the pay gap is significantly smaller in construction occupations as a whole.
• Many career paths. Roles in our industry include everything from craftwork and labor to project and office management to marketing, accounting, IT, and more. And there are many entry points, too. Women can build a solid career straight out of high school, through co-ops and internships, or by making mid-life career changes.
At Baker, we believe in building diverse and inclusive teams and in creating equal opportunities for women to thrive. Through apprenticeships, training, and opportunities to move or advance within our company, we want to provide as many pathways as possible for women to achieve their ambitions.
In signing the Million Women in Construction Community Pledge, we commit to strengthening all these areas to increase access to jobs, training, and leadership opportunities.
