The University of Kentucky (UK) is moving forward with one of the most transformative capital projects in its history after announcing a $150 million gift from the Bill Gatton Foundation to help develop a new arts district in Lexington. The donation is not only the largest philanthropic gift the university has ever received — it also positions UK to dramatically expand its arts programming, campus infrastructure, and community engagement.

The funding will support the construction of a new College of Fine Arts Building, which will sit adjacent to the recently completed Gray Design Building. The new facility is envisioned as a central hub for students in visual arts, music, theatre, dance, and interdisciplinary creative programs. The project also includes a several-hundred-seat performance theater designed to host concerts, dance productions, and theater performances at a professional scale, significantly expanding UK’s cultural footprint.

In addition, the gift will fund the development of an arts pavilion and park that will link multiple blocks near the existing School of Arts and Visual Studies (SA/VS) Building, creating a unified cultural corridor. The university says the new district will serve both the campus community and Lexington residents by offering more public performance spaces, outdoor gathering areas, and dedicated venues for creative expression.

The Bill Gatton Foundation has been one of UK’s most influential philanthropic partners for decades. Previous giving from Bill Gatton — a UK alumnus, businessman, and longtime supporter — exceeds $200 million and has impacted nearly every corner of campus life. Past contributions helped shape the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, the Gatton College of Business and Economics, the Gatton Student Center, and major scholarship programs including UK LEADS, which provides financial support to students facing unmet need.

University officials say the new donation reflects Gatton’s lifelong commitment to advancing education, arts, and student opportunity.

This gift will realize a vision to create an arts district on the western edge of our campus,” said UK President Eli Capilouto. “There, we can integrate art into an area of Lexington that is an increasingly vibrant and vital intersection of campus and city, town, and gown.

The university has not yet released a construction timeline, but planning and early design work are expected to move quickly given the magnitude of the project. Once complete, the arts district will create a landmark cultural destination that blends academic space, performance venues, green areas, and public art — strengthening UK’s role as both an educational institution and a community arts leader.
