San Francisco International Airport is advancing upgrades to one of its most critical maintenance facilities with the selection of STV to support the modernization of the Superbay Hangar. The project aims to enhance operational reliability, improve energy performance and extend the lifespan of infrastructure that supports large commercial aircraft.

STV will provide project delivery services as a major subconsultant to the HCI/InnoActive joint venture throughout the design and construction phases.

Modernizing a Key Airport Maintenance Facility

Originally constructed in 1969, the Superbay Hangar is the only facility at San Francisco International Airport capable of accommodating four Aircraft Design Group V aircraft simultaneously. The hangar plays an essential role in aircraft maintenance operations and airfield readiness.

Planned improvements include upgrades to building systems and supporting infrastructure, energy-efficiency enhancements and targeted interior and exterior renovations designed to improve long-term operational performance.

The work is expected to strengthen the facility's ability to support airport maintenance activities while aligning with the airport's long-term operational and sustainability objectives.

Progressive Design-Build Delivery

The project will be delivered using a progressive design-build model, bringing the owner, designers and construction team together early in the development process. The approach is intended to improve collaboration, reduce project risks and streamline delivery from design through construction.

STV's responsibilities include project delivery services that support coordination, planning and execution throughout the modernization program.

Why It Matters

Airports across the United States continue investing in modernization programs to improve operational resilience, accommodate evolving aircraft requirements and enhance sustainability. Upgrading maintenance infrastructure such as the Superbay Hangar helps airport owners preserve critical assets, improve maintenance capabilities and support efficient airport operations while extending the useful life of existing facilities.
