BLACKSBURG, Va. — Renovation work is set to begin soon on the Upper Quad lawn at Virginia Tech, leading to temporary closures and limited access in the area over the summer months. The project will impact both pedestrian movement and the visual landscape of the historic quad.
According to university officials, the Upper Quad lawn—located between Major Williams and Shanks Halls—along with a small portion of the surrounding sidewalk, will be temporarily unavailable beginning Tuesday, May 27 through Friday, August 15.

The renovations are part of a broader effort to enhance green space and infrastructure in one of the most trafficked areas of campus.
Construction Activity and Noise Expected
Throughout the course of the renovation, individuals in nearby academic buildings should expect noticeable changes to the campus environment. Construction vehicles, equipment, and workers will be present in and around the Upper Quad.
"During this time, nearby building occupants may notice general construction noises and increased contractor presence."
The university advises students, faculty, and staff to use caution when navigating adjacent walkways and to follow any posted signage or detour instructions. Safety barriers and temporary fencing will likely be installed to secure the work zone and maintain pedestrian safety.
Renovation Goals and Access Updates
The renovation aims to improve drainage, lawn health, and usability of the Upper Quad lawn—a common gathering spot for both casual student use and formal university events. By closing the space for the summer session, the university hopes to complete upgrades in time for the return of students in the fall.
While access will be restricted to the lawn itself and a portion of the sidewalk, nearby buildings such as Major Williams and Shanks Halls will remain open. Building entryways are not expected to be blocked, although minor pathway detours may be implemented.
Contact for Questions or Concerns
Community members with concerns or questions regarding the project are encouraged to contact the university’s repair and maintenance office.
"Questions may be directed to vtrepair@vt.edu."
Further updates regarding completion timelines or changes to pedestrian access will be shared by the university as needed.
