US Signal, a Grand Rapids–based digital infrastructure provider backed by Igneo Infrastructure Partners, has begun construction on more than 1,000 miles of new high-density fiber and conduit across Ohio and Indiana, marking one of the largest recent middle-mile network expansions in the Midwest.
The project is designed to strengthen connectivity between core and edge data centers while preparing the region for the rapidly growing demands of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data-intensive enterprise applications.

US Signal announces the active construction of more than 1,000 miles of new, high-density fiber and conduit infrastructure across Ohio and Indiana which reinforces the company’s commitment to delivering scalable, AI-ready connectivity across the United States.
The expansion follows Igneo Infrastructure Partners’ $200 million investment in 2025, when the company first revealed plans to add more than 1,000 miles of fiber alongside new data center developments. According to US Signal, roughly 30 percent of the routes have already been completed, with the remainder expected to be finished by early 2027.
Company leaders say the project is not an upgrade to existing lines but entirely new construction intended to serve next-generation workloads for decades.
"Many providers talk about future builds. We're building now," said Daniel Watts, CEO at US Signal. "This is brand-new infrastructure; new conduit, new fiber, and new routes, designed from day one to support the massive capacity requirements of AI, cloud, and next-generation workloads."
The routes are being installed with multi-conduit systems and high-count fiber to allow for significant scalability. US Signal emphasized that this approach avoids the limitations of overbuilds that rely on aging infrastructure.
The network will directly interconnect US Signal’s core data centers and enable the creation of additional edge facilities along key corridors. By placing compute resources closer to end users, the company aims to support latency-sensitive applications such as AI model training, automation platforms, and real-time analytics.
"Our customers, from hyperscale-adjacent enterprises to regional service providers, need infrastructure that won't cap out in five years," added John White, COO at US Signal. "By combining high-count fiber, multiple conduits, and strategic data center connectivity, we are building a foundation that scales with demand."

The Ohio and Indiana project is part of a multi-phase plan to extend US Signal’s footprint beyond its traditional Midwest base. The company provides dark fiber, lit transport services, colocation, cloud hosting, and data protection solutions to enterprise and service-provider customers.
Executives say the new routes will help position the firm as a critical connectivity partner for organizations deploying AI workloads that require massive bandwidth and low latency.
US Signal plans to showcase details of the build at MetroConnect 2026, scheduled for Feb. 23–25.
