75-Year-Old Man Dies After Crashing Into Mississippi Construction Zone

Caroline Raffetto

GULFPORT, Miss. — A Florida man was killed after driving his vehicle into a closed construction zone on Interstate 10 along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, authorities confirmed.

The accident happened when Antonio Guell, 75, was traveling eastbound on I-10 and entered a lane that had been shut down for active roadwork. Investigators say Guell’s vehicle collided with a backhoe tractor being used by construction workers in the blocked-off area.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Guell was pronounced dead at the site of the crash.

The operator of the backhoe sustained injuries during the impact and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials reported that the backhoe operator’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Construction zones along major highways like Interstate 10 are common sites for accidents, particularly when drivers fail to observe closure signs or become disoriented. Law enforcement is urging drivers to remain cautious, slow down and always follow posted detours and warnings in work areas.

No other vehicles were reported to be involved, and investigators have not yet determined what may have caused Guell to drive into the restricted lane.

Mississippi’s Department of Transportation continues to remind motorists that work zone safety is critical for both drivers and crews. They stress that failing to heed closures can result in tragic consequences for workers and travelers alike.

The crash temporarily closed additional lanes as crews and first responders cleared the scene. Traffic delays were reported in both directions but returned to normal by late afternoon.

This incident comes as Mississippi sees a busy summer construction season along major corridors, with projects ranging from resurfacing to bridge repairs. Officials urge all drivers, especially those unfamiliar with local routes, to check for active construction updates and plan extra travel time.

More updates on this story will follow if new details are released.
