The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will undertake preservation and rehabilitation work on the bridge, which spans Interstate 90. The project is scheduled to start May 1 and will include installation of a new bridge deck and asphalt surface.
As construction gets underway, eastbound traffic will be detoured beginning May 1. The detour is expected to remain in place through August 2026 while crews complete the work.
Despite the changes, westbound traffic and pedestrian access across the bridge will remain open during construction. Officials also confirmed that access to nearby residences and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
The designated detour route will guide drivers along Frontage Road South, Shore Drive and Frontage Road North before reconnecting with Ararat Street. Transportation officials are urging motorists to follow posted signage and allow extra travel time when passing through the area.

The rehabilitation effort is part of ongoing infrastructure maintenance initiatives designed to preserve key transportation assets across the region. By replacing the bridge deck and resurfacing the roadway, the project aims to enhance durability and improve long-term performance.
MassDOT is advising drivers to use caution in the construction zone and remain aware of workers and equipment as activity increases on site.
For Worcester residents and commuters, the project represents a necessary upgrade to critical infrastructure, though it will require temporary adjustments to traffic patterns during the construction period.
