Arevon Begins $600M Nighthawk Energy Storage Project in California

Arevon Starts Construction on $600M Energy Storage Project to Power San Diego Region
Arevon Energy, a leading U.S.-based renewable energy company headquartered in Arizona, has officially begun construction on its latest large-scale infrastructure investment—the Nighthawk Energy Storage Project in Poway, California. The utility-scale battery facility is designed to deliver 300 megawatts (MW) of power and store 1,200 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity, representing a $600 million investment in California’s energy resilience and transition to clean power.

Slated to be fully owned and operated by Arevon, the Nighthawk project will connect to the grid through the Sycamore Canyon Substation, located on the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar. Once operational, the system will distribute energy across the greater San Diego area, helping to stabilize the local grid and mitigate brownouts and blackouts during periods of peak demand.
“What sets the Nighthawk Energy Storage Project apart is Arevon’s years of experience and proven track record in successfully developing safe, reliable renewable energy and battery storage projects in California and throughout the United States, as well as the project’s design, which includes added safety measures and will comprise the safest and most advanced batteries on the market today,” said Kevin Smith, CEO of Arevon.
The battery installation will use modern lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology—known for its thermal stability, long life cycles, and enhanced safety features. The system is designed to absorb energy from the grid when demand is low and dispatch it during peak usage times, providing critical backup to support both reliability and sustainability goals.
Public-Private Partnership with Community Benefits
The Nighthawk project is expected to deliver over $30 million in direct payments to local governments and communities over the course of the facility’s life. The City of Poway alone is projected to receive approximately $12 million, funds that can be allocated toward infrastructure, public services, and education.
“Battery storage is the way of the future, and Arevon is pleased to bring this essential energy solution to Poway, where we are committed to being a great community partner through the project’s multi-decade life,” Smith said.
Recognizing public safety as a top priority, Arevon has partnered with the Poway Fire Department to ensure emergency preparedness and incorporate advanced fire protection systems into the project’s design.
“The company has partnered with the Poway Fire Department, who is committed to protecting the community, first responders, and the facility in the unlikely event an incident occurs,” Smith added.

Economic and Employment Impact
During peak construction, the project will create more than 130 jobs, bolstering the local economy and providing new opportunities for skilled workers in the clean energy and electrical trades. Rosendin, a California-headquartered construction firm with extensive experience in renewable energy infrastructure, has been selected as the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contractor for the project.
The Nighthawk facility is backed by a long-term resource adequacy contract signed in 2021 with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), one of the largest utilities in the country. Once online, the project will support PG&E’s clean energy targets while enhancing grid stability in Southern California.
Part of Arevon’s Broader Growth in California
Nighthawk is just one of several large-scale projects Arevon has recently announced or advanced in California. The company already operates more than 3.2 gigawatts (GW) of assets in the state and has over 800 MW currently under construction. Additional milestones include:
- Start of operations at the Peregrine Energy Storage Project
- Progress on Eland 1 and Eland 2 Solar-plus-Storage Projects
- Launch of the Vikings and Condor Energy Storage Projects
- Offtake agreements secured for the Cormorant and Avocet Energy Storage Projects
These projects reinforce Arevon’s national leadership in energy storage and solar development. The company also recently announced several major solar power projects in Indiana, signaling its expanding footprint across multiple states.
Looking Ahead
With energy demand in California rising and the state accelerating its clean energy transition, Arevon’s investment in utility-scale storage is a key component of future grid reliability and decarbonization.
“Arevon is committed to delivering essential energy infrastructure that is safe, reliable, and responsive to the needs of communities and utilities alike,” Smith said. “The Nighthawk project is another example of how battery storage is playing a critical role in building a more resilient and sustainable power system.”
