POWAY, Calif. — Arevon Energy, Inc. has officially marked the next milestone in California’s energy transition with construction proceedings underway at its massive 300 megawatt (MW) / 1,200 megawatt-hour (MWh) Nighthawk Energy Storage Project in Poway.

At a recent celebration event, the U.S.-based renewable energy leader gathered local officials, contractors, and community partners to commemorate a project that promises to boost grid stability, lower electricity costs, and support the integration of more renewable energy for the greater San Diego region.

Once operational, Nighthawk will have the capacity to power up to 385,000 homes for four hours during peak demand periods, delivering critical backup power that helps reduce the risk of rolling blackouts during heat waves and extreme weather.

The $600 million project will connect to the Sycamore Canyon Substation on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and supply long-term energy and resource adequacy to Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) under a contract signed in 2021. The project’s location — near major urban centers — makes it ideally positioned to help balance supply and demand when solar and wind generation fluctuate.

Arevon expects Nighthawk to generate significant local economic benefits as well. Over its lifetime, the project is estimated to provide more than $30 million in payments to the county and surrounding area, with the City of Poway directly receiving about $12 million to support schools, roads, and community services. California-headquartered Rosendin is leading the construction work, which will create over 130 jobs at peak, boosting local spending at restaurants, stores, and hotels.

“What sets the Nighthawk Energy Storage Project apart is Arevon's years of experience and proven track record in successfully developing safe, reliable renewable energy and battery storage projects in California and throughout the United States as well as the project's design, which includes added safety measures and will comprise the safest and most advanced batteries on the market today,” said Kevin Smith, Chief Executive Officer at Arevon.

He added: “Battery storage is the way of the future, and Arevon is pleased to bring this essential energy solution to Poway, where we are committed to being a great community partner through the project's multi-decade life.”

Arevon’s Nighthawk project will use modern lithium iron phosphate batteries — widely recognized as the safest battery technology — and includes advanced fire prevention and emergency response measures. Arevon is partnering closely with the Poway Fire Department to ensure community and first responder safety.

As part of its long-term community commitment, Arevon is also investing directly in local organizations. The company has pledged:

  • A $2 million community fund for Poway’s public projects.
  • Support for the Scripps Ranch Civic Association, the Rancho Family YMCA, and the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of San Diego County.
  • Sponsorships for events like the Poway Fall Festival and local special needs programs, including the Heroes Softball Game.

Arevon’s impact goes far beyond Poway. With over 4.7 gigawatts (GW) of solar and storage in operation across 17 states — and another 1.5 GW under construction — the Scottsdale, Arizona-headquartered company is accelerating America’s clean energy goals. Recent milestones include bringing online projects like the Peregrine and Condor Energy Storage Projects and securing new deals for the Cormorant and Avocet Energy Storage sites.

For California, large-scale batteries like Nighthawk are vital for meeting aggressive renewable energy targets and providing a dependable power buffer as the state retires fossil fuel plants. By storing excess solar and wind energy during the day and discharging it when demand peaks in the evening, battery systems like Nighthawk help keep the lights on affordably and sustainably.

With construction underway, Arevon says it remains dedicated to delivering a safe, reliable, and resilient grid for San Diego area residents — and to showing how community partnership and clean energy can go hand in hand.
