Balfour Beatty’s U.S. division has landed a major highway contract in Texas, securing an $889 million deal to overhaul a key stretch of Interstate 30 in Dallas County, the company announced in an April 24 news release.

The London-based contractor will be responsible for reconstructing a critical 2.3-mile section of I-30 on the east side of Dallas County, a heavily traveled corridor that connects commuters, freight, and regional traffic across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The project, awarded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), aims to significantly enhance traffic flow, safety, and overall connectivity within one of the busiest transportation hubs in the state.

A centerpiece of the work involves expanding the current general-purpose lanes from six to 12. The move is designed to help alleviate chronic congestion along the corridor, providing relief for daily commuters and improving the movement of goods through the region. The project will not only boost local traffic operations but also strengthen regional connectivity by tying into other major infrastructure improvements recently completed in Dallas.

As part of the scope, Balfour Beatty will also construct nine new crossings that will connect I-30 to several major arteries, including the Southern Gateway, I-35E Lowest Stemmons, and the Dallas Horseshoe projects — all of which Balfour Beatty previously delivered for TxDOT. These connections are intended to ensure smoother transitions between critical highways and reduce traffic bottlenecks in downtown Dallas and surrounding areas.

The award builds on Balfour Beatty’s growing footprint in Texas infrastructure. It comes on the heels of the company winning a $746 million contract for the I-35 Capital Express South project in Austin, which involves the reconstruction of a 2.5-mile segment of the highway south of the city’s downtown core.

“With decades of experience executing complex roadway projects in Dallas, and an in-depth understanding of the region’s infrastructure, we are uniquely positioned to deliver these essential improvements,” said Leo Quinn, Balfour Beatty’s CEO, in the release. He emphasized the firm’s longstanding partnership with TxDOT and deep local expertise as key advantages in tackling the highly complex I-30 rebuild.

According to the announcement, preconstruction activities for the I-30 project are scheduled to begin in 2026. Construction is expected to span approximately five years, with the goal of delivering a safer, more efficient, and future-ready transportation corridor for Dallas County residents and businesses.

This I-30 reconstruction effort is a crucial component of broader statewide initiatives to modernize Texas' aging highway infrastructure and accommodate the region’s explosive population and economic growth. With Texas continually ranking among the fastest-growing states, investment in expanded and updated roadways is seen as vital to maintaining mobility and supporting continued prosperity.
