Belgrade Street Work to Improve Drainage, Pedestrian Access

BELGRADE, Mont. — A summer construction project in Belgrade is targeting long-standing infrastructure problems on West Cameron Avenue by improving drainage systems and pedestrian access near Lions Park and the Belgrade Senior Center.

Construction officially began the first week of June and will continue through July, according to city officials. The street upgrades will stretch from North Broadway to North Hoffman Street, a section that sees frequent use by both pedestrians and motorists.

The project is a joint effort between the City of Belgrade and local contractor CK May Excavating, Inc., and is expected to have both immediate and long-term benefits for residents.

According to a city statement, the initiative aims to “improve pedestrian access to places like Lions Park, the Belgrade Senior Center, and the Dry Creek Path, and to fix longstanding drainage issues.”

For years, residents in the area have raised concerns about standing water and unsafe walking conditions, especially during spring runoff or heavy rains. City officials said these updates will significantly improve public safety and walkability along the corridor.

The improvements include the installation of new curbs and gutters, a new sidewalk along the north side of Cameron Avenue, and extensive upgrades to the stormwater drainage system, which has been a major issue during peak weather events.

While construction is ongoing, parts of West Cameron Avenue will be closed to through traffic. However, city officials have stated that residents who live within the construction zone will maintain access to their homes.

“Lions Park will remain open, including all scheduled baseball games,” the city confirmed in a public notice, reassuring families and local sports teams that recreational activities won’t be interrupted during the work.

Local officials have encouraged residents to follow detour signs and exercise caution near the work zone. Updates and traffic alerts related to the project are expected to be posted on the city’s website and social media channels throughout the summer.

Once completed, the improvements are expected to create a safer, more accessible environment for walkers, cyclists, and seniors, while also reducing the risk of water-related property damage in the surrounding neighborhood.
