Blaze Hits Brownsburg Wawa Site

BROWNSBURG, Ind. — A fire at a construction site in Brownsburg has temporarily halted progress on one of Indiana’s most eagerly awaited gas station openings.

Around 11:35 a.m. Friday morning, firefighters were dispatched to the intersection of State Road 267 and East 700 North after smoke was seen pouring from the future site of a Wawa gas station and convenience store. The building, still under construction, quickly became the center of emergency response as crews worked to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters arrived swiftly and were able to suppress the fire before it could spread further. Preliminary images from the scene show charred insulation material on the building’s exterior, indicating that the fire may have originated in the unfinished roofing or wall components.

The Brownsburg Fire Department reported that one construction worker was trapped on the roof at the time of the incident. Fire crews safely assisted the individual down to the ground. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The fire comes just weeks before Wawa was expected to debut in Indiana. The Brownsburg store is one of 15 locations under development across central Indiana, as the East Coast-based chain aggressively expands into the Midwest. The company has announced that its first Indiana location will open in Daleville in mid-May, marking a milestone for the brand in its efforts to establish a foothold in the state.

While the exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined, the damage could affect the timeline for Brownsburg’s grand opening. Wawa has not issued an official statement regarding the incident, but the fire is expected to delay progress at the site.

Wawa, which originated in Pennsylvania, has built a loyal following for its made-to-order food, fresh coffee, and 24/7 service. The expansion into Indiana has generated significant buzz among fans and newcomers alike.

Construction activity at the site was paused following the incident as investigators and fire inspectors assess the damage and determine when it will be safe to resume work.

Though the setback is unfortunate, community members remain optimistic about the store's eventual opening. Local residents have expressed their excitement about Wawa’s arrival, and many are hopeful the project will get back on track quickly once safety assessments are complete.

The Brownsburg Fire Department is expected to release more details about the fire once their investigation concludes.
