Construction Underway for New Pickleball Complex at Albert-Oakland Park

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Demolition has begun on the northernmost tennis and pickleball courts at Albert-Oakland Park as crews prepare for a brand-new pickleball complex, the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department announced Thursday.

The existing southern pickleball courts will remain open during construction, ensuring players continue to have access to facilities.

The new complex will include 10 lighted courts, with a 10-foot-wide concrete walkway separating two sets of five courts for safety and accessibility. According to previous KOMU 8 reports, the project will replace two of the park’s three older tennis courts.

“We’re excited to bring this new facility to our community,” said a spokesperson for Columbia Parks and Recreation. “The design enhances safety, provides modern amenities, and ensures pickleball enthusiasts have a premier place to play for years to come.”

The Show-Me Pickleball Club is supporting the project with donated nets and posts, reflecting strong local engagement in recreational development. Funding comes from the 2021 Park Sales Tax, and the Columbia City Council approved the project in December 2024.

The project also includes improvements beyond the courts, such as upgraded shelters and a playground replacement, creating a more family-friendly and welcoming park environment.

Construction is expected to progress through the coming months, with the department aiming to open the new courts to the public as soon as possible while maintaining safety and accessibility during the build.

“Albert-Oakland Park has long been a hub for recreational activity,” the spokesperson said. “These upgrades reflect our commitment to providing high-quality amenities that meet the needs of all residents, from young athletes to senior players.”

With Columbia seeing growing interest in pickleball, the addition of this modern 10-court facility is anticipated to attract both local players and regional tournaments, contributing to community engagement and recreation-driven economic activity.
