Announced in partnership with the Indiana Broadband Office, the project spans nearly 550 miles of newly constructed fiber infrastructure. The multi-million-dollar investment extends service across Bartholomew, Carroll, Fayette, Hamilton, Johnson, Marshall and Morgan counties.

The expansion is part of the State of Indiana’s broadband grant program, which is designed to improve internet accessibility and adoption, particularly in rural and underserved regions.

“Our goal is to ensure that every Indiana resident has access to high-speed, reliable, affordable Internet,” said Matt Ubelhor, Indiana Secretary of Transportation & Infrastructure. “Connecting every corner of Indiana will require policymakers, community leaders, and service providers to work together to meet the growing needs of our residents and businesses – with this latest investment, Comcast continues to help us make that happen.”

State Partnership Strengthens Rural Connectivity

The fiber build reflects a coordinated effort between private investment and state-supported broadband initiatives. Over the past three years, Comcast has invested more than $634 million in Indiana to upgrade its network and expand new service areas, reaching thousands of additional households and businesses in rural communities.

Residents and businesses in LaPorte and Porter counties were also recently connected as part of Comcast’s ongoing collaboration with state officials.

By leveraging public-private partnerships, the initiative aims to close the digital divide that has limited economic growth, remote learning opportunities and telehealth access in some parts of the state.

Future Expansion Through BEAD Program

Comcast officials said the company plans to continue expanding its next-generation network across Indiana using a mix of private capital and state and local partnerships. The company also intends to participate in the federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program, which provides funding to expand broadband access nationwide.

“Ensuring all Hoosiers can wield the full power of the Internet continues to be a top priority for Comcast,” said Joni Hart, Vice President of Government & Community Affairs for Comcast Indiana. “There are residents and businesses who will now have access to reliable, high-speed Internet for the first time – this build supercharges their possibilities at work, at school, and at home. The partnership between the Indiana Broadband Office and Comcast continues to be life changing.”

Broadband expansion has increasingly become a cornerstone of economic development strategies in Indiana and across the Midwest. Access to reliable, high-speed internet is viewed as essential infrastructure — comparable to roads and utilities — supporting workforce development, small business growth, advanced manufacturing, and education.

For rural communities in particular, improved connectivity enables remote work opportunities, supports agricultural technology advancements and enhances access to online healthcare services. It also positions counties to compete for new business investment in an increasingly digital economy.

State officials have emphasized that continued collaboration between internet service providers and government agencies will be critical to achieving universal broadband coverage. With nearly 550 miles of fiber now in place, the latest build marks another step toward that goal while laying groundwork for future digital expansion across Indiana.
