IOWA CITY, Iowa — A new phase of improvements is beginning at Court Hill Park in Iowa City, as construction crews prepare to break ground Thursday, Aug. 21. The project’s first step will install a concrete pad that will eventually serve as the foundation for a new park shelter.

According to city officials, the initial construction is expected to take about one week, with minimal disruption to the park. Once the concrete work is complete, the shelter installation will follow later this year.

While the park and adjacent trail will remain open, residents are advised to expect heavier foot traffic and equipment movement near the project area. “We want to reassure park visitors that they can continue to enjoy Court Hill Park, but we do ask for extra awareness during the construction period,” city staff said.

A Growing Investment in Parks

The upgrades at Court Hill Park are part of Iowa City’s broader commitment to neighborhood parks. Over the past decade, the city has steadily invested in improvements — from updated playground equipment and safer walking paths to new shelters that encourage group gatherings.

Parks and Recreation leaders emphasized that the new shelter will serve both everyday park-goers and community organizations. It will offer a shaded space for families in the summer, a hub for neighborhood picnics, and a reliable location for recreational programs and events.
