GOLDFIELD, Iowa — A fire sparked during ongoing construction activities has caused significant damage at an Iowa-based animal rescue facility, highlighting the risks associated with demolition and site work.
Operators at Lazy J Rescue Ranch said the incident occurred over the weekend as crews were dismantling an aging structure on the property. According to a statement shared on social media, a single ember from a nearby burn pile ignited the blaze, which quickly spread and engulfed the building before extending to a nearby barn.
“Out here, there’s always something, but this was a reminder of just how quickly things can turn, and how much worse it could have been,” the organization wrote.
The fire began while crews were tearing down a deteriorating structure as part of ongoing improvements at the ranch. Despite precautions, an ember traveled from a burn pile and ignited nearby materials, leading to a fast-moving fire that escalated within minutes.
The ranch described the rapid progression of the blaze, noting that the structure was quickly overtaken by flames and the fire spread to the back barn, where several animals were housed temporarily.
“Tyler ran into the barn to get Frank, Wren, and Fern out of their isolation stalls. By the time he made it in, the walls and rafters above them were already on fire. Those moments felt like forever, but we are beyond grateful to say that aside from being scared, every single animal is safe,” the post stated.
Emergency responders, including the Goldfield Volunteer Fire Department and Eagle Grove EMS, arrived on scene and worked to extinguish the fire and assess any injuries to both humans and animals.
The ranch credited first responders for preventing a more severe outcome, writing, “Their quick action is the reason this didn’t turn into something even more devastating.”
While no animals were injured, the fire caused extensive damage to buildings and construction materials intended for current and future projects. Ranch operators said the loss has forced them to accelerate renovation plans, particularly for the affected barn.
“The back barn, which was far down on our renovation list, just jumped way up. Frank, Wren, and Fern were only temporarily being housed back there while we waited for their new shelter to arrive… and now that space is compromised. What was already in motion has suddenly become urgent. We need their new shelter here ASAP,” the ranch said.
Cleanup efforts have been underway for more than a day, with volunteers stepping in to assist. Local high school seniors from Eagle Grove are expected to participate in the recovery as part of a service project.
“Thank y’all for always standing behind us, even on the really hard days. We’re shaken, we’re tired… but we’re also very aware of how much worse this could have been,” the organization added.
The ranch indicated that a fundraiser may be organized to offset the unexpected costs associated with rebuilding and replacing damaged materials.
Lazy J Rescue Ranch operates as a nonprofit organization providing care and sanctuary for animals with medical needs, mobility challenges and those rescued from neglect or abuse. The facility also hosts educational events and community outreach programs aimed at raising awareness about animal welfare.
The incident underscores the importance of fire safety protocols during construction and demolition activities, particularly when working near combustible materials or open burn areas.
