Construction Starts on New Oklahoma Governor’s Residence

OKLAHOMA CITY — Work is officially underway on a new governor’s residence on the grounds of the Oklahoma Governor’s Mansion, marking a major addition to the 14-acre historic campus.

Governor Kevin Stitt told FOX23 News that the current mansion, while iconic, no longer meets modern accessibility and functionality standards. He said the nearly century-old structure presents challenges for families and staff, particularly because it does not comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

"That's not the correct term, that I wasn't satisfied," Stitt said about the building of a new modern executive residence. "This is a gift for the next governor."

The new home is being constructed on the south end of the mansion grounds. State leaders emphasized that the original Governor’s Mansion will remain untouched and will continue to serve as a centerpiece of Oklahoma history. Plans call for the historic building to operate as an onsite museum and ceremonial venue.

"We have a beautiful Governor's Mansion. Most states are starting to protect their historic Governor's Mansions that are over 100 years old. Some of them are 200 years old. I'm building a family home on the 14-acre complex all by private donations."

Privately funded project

Stitt stressed that no taxpayer dollars are being used for the project. Instead, he said, private donors have contributed the full cost, eliminating the need for legislative appropriations.

"There will be a special home for the family and then the older mansion will be a museum and have special events. We can even give more tours."

The governor explained that his own family’s experience highlighted the need for a more accessible residence. After living in the mansion for two years, the Stitts relocated to a private home due to mobility challenges faced by a family member.

"I wanted the kids to have the experience of living there, but my mother-in-law couldn't get upstairs."

Stitt compared the new residence to upgrades made by previous administrations, such as the addition of a pool and outdoor kitchen, describing the project as a long-term investment for future governors.

Preservation concerns and oversight

The Oklahoma Preservation Commission granted preliminary approval for the construction last September. However, some preservation advocates and Democratic lawmakers have questioned the transparency of private donations and the potential long-term maintenance costs that could fall to the state.

Critics have asked for disclosure of donors and whether any contributors received political favors. Others worry that operating two buildings on the campus could require additional public funding in the future.

Stitt has rejected those concerns, reiterating that the project is intended to protect the historic mansion rather than replace it. He said the existing building will continue to host dignitaries and public events once the new home is completed.

Timeline ahead

Construction crews have already begun site preparation, and Stitt said he hopes the new residence will be finished by the end of 2026. Until then, the governor will continue to use the current mansion for official functions.

He said he views the effort as part of a broader tradition of governors leaving improvements for their successors.
