DPR Construction Progresses on Holy Cross Emergency Department in Deerfield Beach

August 13, 2025 DPR Construction’s South Florida Business Unit has reached a significant project milestone for the Holy Cross Health Free-Standing Emergency Department (FSED) in Deerfield Beach, completing the building’s exterior and transitioning to interior construction work on August 11.

The 25,000-square-foot facility, located at 340 S. Federal Highway, is being built on the former Orchard Supply Hardware site. Initially slated for cosmetic upgrades, the project took a more complex turn after early demolition revealed critical structural deficiencies.

According to Bala Purushothaman, DPR’s project manager, “As we started demolishing the interiors of the existing building, we discovered tie beam issues, no rebar in the exterior walls and other issues that forced us to demolish the entire building except for a few steel beams. But we are tracking great per our current schedule and are on schedule for the planned opening in the spring of next year.”

Purushothaman credited the progress to the dedication and skill of more than 30 trade partners involved in the project. “The entire team has enabled us to maintain the schedule, manage the budget and earn an excellent safety record,” he said.

When it opens, the Holy Cross FSED will provide a full range of emergency medical services, supported by advanced diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, ultrasound and CT scans. Patients will also have access to an on-site laboratory, private treatment and exam rooms, and a dedicated ambulance bay to ensure rapid emergency response.

Holy Cross Health Chief Nursing Officer Taren O’Brien, MSN, R.N., emphasized the facility’s role in improving local healthcare access. “The FSED seeks to reduce patient wait times and will be open 24/7, making emergency services convenient and accessible to residents of Deerfield Beach and the surrounding areas,” she said.

The Deerfield Beach facility is part of DPR’s broader healthcare construction portfolio in South Florida. The company is simultaneously building two additional FSEDs for Memorial Healthcare Systems in Pembroke Pines and Miramar.
