The construction of two buried seawalls along S.R. A1A in Flagler and Volusia counties is nearing completion, offering increased protection against storm damage to local infrastructure. These projects are located from South Central Avenue to Highbridge Road in Flagler and from Sunrise Avenue to Marlin Drive in Ormond-by-the-Sea.
According to a press release from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the seawalls are designed to protect against infrastructure damage caused by severe weather events, with completion timelines varying between the two locations. The Flagler County seawall is expected to be fully finished by the end of June, while the Ormond-by-the-Sea seawall is anticipated to be completed by early 2026.

The Flagler County seawall, known as the North wall, stretches from Highbridge Road in Volusia County to South Central Avenue in Flagler Beach. Recent updates from FDOT indicate that the contractor has completed the drilling of concrete piles for the wall. While the Flagler County segment is nearly complete, work continues on finalizing the concrete cap near Highbridge Road, along with landscaping and beach walkover enhancements in that area.
Meanwhile, the Ormond-by-the-Sea seawall, located south of Sunrise Avenue to Marlin Drive, is progressing ahead of schedule. The contractor for this section is aiming to complete 80% of the wall piles before the start of the 2025 hurricane season on June 1, 2025. Once the piling work is done, the next phase will involve constructing the concrete caps for the wall sections, followed by regrading the surrounding dunes and beginning the landscaping and beach walkover construction. The first walkover in this area is slated to begin rebuilding in May.
