SIOUX FALLS — A tragic accident on Interstate 90 claimed the life of a Flandreau man Monday morning when his vehicle struck a construction truck enforcing a lane closure, officials said.
At approximately 9 a.m. on June 2, law enforcement responded to a crash near mile marker 394 on I-90, about two miles west of Sioux Falls in Minnehaha County. According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan traveling westbound collided with a Ford F-350 construction vehicle that was stationed in the right lane.

The construction truck was actively managing traffic flow, using illuminated warning signs and an arrow board to direct vehicles safely into the left lane. Troopers reported, “The Grand Caravan struck the rear of the construction vehicle, which was working to enforce a lane closure.” The impact caused the construction truck to veer into the median where it caught fire, while the Grand Caravan came to a stop on the shoulder.
The 50-year-old driver of the Dodge, a resident of Flandreau, succumbed to injuries from the crash at the scene. The construction worker driving the Ford F-350 sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Names of those involved have not been released pending notification of their families, authorities said. The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
This incident highlights the inherent risks associated with highway construction zones and the critical importance of adhering to traffic controls designed to protect both workers and motorists.
