Fort Leonard Wood has officially launched a major housing expansion, breaking ground Wednesday on 56 new homes designed to better support military families living on base. The new residences will be built along Cable Street, near the Woodlands Community Center, an elementary school, and several neighborhood playgrounds — a location chosen for its proximity to key family resources.

According to the U.S. Army base’s announcement, the project consists of 28 duplex structures and represents a significant portion of a larger $50 million construction effort. That broader initiative includes substantial site preparation, demolition of aging homes, and upgrades to infrastructure that will serve the modernized housing area.
Balfour Beatty Communities Operations, the base’s on-post housing partner, emphasized that the new units were crafted with a focus on modern family needs. Shawna Swanson, vice president of operations, said the homes were intentionally built to accommodate today’s military households.
“They include modern layouts, energy efficient features and will also have three Americans with Disability Act-compliant homes to ensure accessibility,” Swanson said in the release.

The project reflects a nationwide military housing push aimed at improving living conditions, updating aging units, and increasing accessibility for service members and their families. Fort Leonard Wood’s investment is expected to raise the standard for family housing on post and improve overall readiness by ensuring families have stable, comfortable living environments.
While the installation has not yet released a completion date, officials say the work marks a major milestone in ongoing housing improvements. The combination of demolition, infrastructure upgrades, and new home construction underscores the Army’s commitment to long-term community development on base.
The upcoming housing area is planned to feature:
These additions are expected to enhance daily life for military families and create a safer, more convenient neighborhood environment.
More information will be shared as the project progresses, with the base expected to announce move-in timelines once construction nears completion.
