The new Mountain View Elementary School has entered the bidding phase, with groundbreaking expected as early as June and construction scheduled to begin this summer, according to local reports.

Located near Wallick Road and Division Avenue in Cheyenne’s expanding South Triad area, the school will accommodate approximately 650 students from 10 feeder schools across the district. The campus is expected to open for the Fall 2028 academic year.

The project marks a significant milestone for the district because it will be the first school specifically designed for fifth- and sixth-grade students.

Architecture and engineering firms JLG Architects, FDL Consulting and Elske Architecture are leading the design and planning work for the project. A general contractor had not yet been announced at the time of publication.

Design Prioritizes Student Accessibility and Learning

District officials and project designers said the building’s layout reflects a strong emphasis on accessibility and inclusive learning environments.

Approximately 27% of the students expected to attend Mountain View Elementary have special needs, including autism spectrum disorders and mobility impairments. Designers incorporated several specialized features intended to support those students more effectively than traditional school layouts.

Instead of locating special education and life-skills classrooms along interior corridors, the design team placed those spaces along exterior walls to increase exposure to natural light and create a more comfortable learning environment.

The school will also include a dedicated sensory room and expanded adaptive physical education spaces intended to better serve students with varying developmental and physical needs.

The approach reflects broader trends in K-12 construction, where districts are increasingly prioritizing wellness-focused educational spaces, flexible classroom configurations and specialized support areas.

Safety and Infrastructure Integrated Into Project

Safety and traffic management are also central components of the school’s design.

Plans call for a three-tiered security system that includes a locked front vestibule, separate classroom pod access points and dedicated traffic zones for buses and parent drop-off areas. The design is intended to improve student safety while minimizing congestion during arrival and dismissal times.

Because the school site is located in a developing portion of Cheyenne, district officials coordinated with city, county and state infrastructure agencies throughout the planning process.

The collaboration addressed utilities, roadway access and broader site development considerations necessary to support the project.

While district officials have not publicly released the total construction cost or detailed funding sources, the project represents one of the largest upcoming education construction starts in the region.

The development comes as school districts across the Mountain West continue responding to population growth and evolving educational requirements through new facility investments and modernization efforts.

With bids expected soon and site preparation activities anticipated this summer, Mountain View Elementary School is positioned to become a major long-term educational asset for the Cheyenne community.
