Construction crews are progressing on a new parking area at Fort McCoy aimed at improving operational efficiency for the Wisconsin National Guard’s Maneuver Area Training Equipment Site (MATES).

The project, underway in the cantonment area of the installation, will provide expanded space to accommodate hundreds of pieces of military equipment. According to officials with the Directorate of Public Works, the new facility is intended to relocate equipment currently stored too close to an active training range.
Workers were observed completing portions of the construction on April 24, marking continued progress on the infrastructure upgrade that supports readiness and safety for military operations.
The new parking area is expected to enhance the functionality of the Wisconsin National Guard’s MATES program by providing a more suitable and strategically located space for equipment storage and staging. The relocation will help reduce potential conflicts between stored equipment and nearby training activities.
Fort McCoy plays a critical role in national defense, serving as a major training center for military personnel across all service branches. The installation supports field and classroom training for more than 100,000 service members annually, making infrastructure improvements essential to maintaining operational readiness.
The project aligns with the installation’s broader mission to strengthen Total Force readiness by serving as a mobilization and training hub for U.S. military forces. Officials emphasize that modernizing facilities such as MATES ensures that troops have access to the resources needed to deploy and operate effectively.
The addition of the new parking area reflects ongoing investments in military infrastructure designed to improve both safety and efficiency. By relocating equipment away from high-risk zones, the project reduces exposure to training hazards while optimizing space within the installation.

The effort also supports the long-term vision of Fort McCoy as a premier training center. The installation has played a key role in military preparedness since its establishment and continues to evolve to meet modern operational demands.
Located in the Upper Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin and has served as a cornerstone for training and mobilization efforts for decades.
As construction progresses, officials say the new parking area will contribute to more efficient equipment management and improved coordination of training activities. The project underscores the importance of infrastructure upgrades in sustaining military readiness and supporting the evolving needs of the armed forces.
