Garfield County, Okla. – A tragic accident claimed the life of a construction worker in Garfield County on Tuesday night after he fell from a wind turbine that was still under construction, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO).

Deputies reported the fall happened east of 150th near Phillips Road. Emergency responders were dispatched to the site, but despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the worker has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities noted that wind turbine construction crews often work overnight hours. “Companies usually work on the turbines at night, as there is typically less wind,” the GCSO explained, adding that calmer nighttime conditions reduce risks for crane operations and other installation work.
The incident remains under investigation, and officials have not yet confirmed whether equipment failure, human error, or other factors played a role in the fall. Representatives from the construction company involved are cooperating with authorities, and safety regulators are expected to review the site.

The accident highlights the dangers associated with wind energy development, an industry that continues to grow rapidly in Oklahoma and across the U.S. While wind power provides clean and renewable energy, the construction and maintenance of turbines often require workers to perform tasks hundreds of feet above ground, where even a single misstep can be fatal.
The sheriff’s office has not announced whether the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been called to investigate, but such incidents typically prompt a federal workplace safety review.
Community members expressed shock at the loss, and workplace safety advocates continue to call for enhanced protections for those building the infrastructure that powers the state’s renewable energy economy.
“This is a devastating reminder of the risks faced by construction crews who help drive our energy future,” one local resident said.
The GCSO urged patience as the investigation continues, assuring the public that more details would be released once available.
