Growing demand for healthcare services continues to drive investment in hospital infrastructure, prompting health systems to expand clinical capacity and modernize patient care facilities. A new construction phase at Cleveland Clinic's Avon campus reflects that trend, with Gilbane Building overseeing a major healthcare expansion in northeast Ohio.

The $322 million project will increase the size and capabilities of both Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital and the Richard E. Jacobs Health Center, providing additional space for emergency, inpatient and outpatient care to support communities across Lorain County and the surrounding region.

Healthcare Expansion Adds Clinical Capacity

The multi-phase program includes approximately 250,000 square feet of new and expanded clinical space designed to improve patient access and operational efficiency.

Planned improvements include a larger emergency department, expanded diagnostic imaging services featuring MRI and CT capabilities, an enlarged cancer center with additional infusion space and two new external beam radiation therapy units, expanded surgical facilities with additional operating rooms, increased outpatient care capacity, more medical-surgical inpatient beds and a larger intensive care unit. The project also includes construction of a new parking garage to accommodate growing campus activity.

Project Team and Delivery Schedule

Gilbane Building is serving as construction manager for the expansion, continuing its longstanding work with Cleveland Clinic on healthcare construction projects. Design services are being provided by HKS in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic Buildings + Design and clinical stakeholders to align the facility with operational and patient care requirements.

Construction is expected to continue in phases, with project completion targeted for 2029.

Why It Matters

Healthcare facility expansion remains a significant source of construction activity as hospital systems respond to population growth and rising demand for specialized medical services. For construction owners, contractors and healthcare developers, projects of this scale highlight continued investment opportunities in complex medical facilities requiring phased delivery, specialized building systems and coordination that allows healthcare operations to continue throughout construction.
