A $52 million construction contract will advance the final phase of airfield improvements at Tucson International Airport, supporting aviation safety and long-term operational capacity. Granite has been selected by the Tucson Airport Authority (TAA) to deliver the CMAR2 project under the airport's Airfield Safety Enhancement (ASE) Program.
The wider programme represents an investment of more than $400 million to modernise the airport's airfield layout and align facilities with current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety standards. Granite has completed or secured every project within the multi-year initiative.
Granite's construction scope includes modifying taxiways and connector taxiways to meet current commercial aviation safety requirements. The work also involves relocating and upgrading FAA navigational aids.
Material supply will be a significant component of the project. Granite's Swan Facility is expected to provide more than 80,000 tons of FAA-specification aggregate and approximately 50,000 tons of FAA-specification asphalt.
The improvements will require close coordination with active airport operations while supporting commercial, military and general aviation users.
Preconstruction activities began in September 2026. Overall project completion is anticipated in 2029.
The CMAR contract builds on Granite's established relationship with the Tucson Airport Authority and its experience delivering airfield infrastructure projects. The work will complete the remaining construction phase of the ASE programme.
The contract advances a major airport infrastructure investment focused on improving airfield safety and operational reliability. For aviation construction stakeholders, the project highlights the scale of specialised pavement, taxiway and navigational infrastructure work required to modernise an active airport while maintaining ongoing operations.
