
Growing investment in water infrastructure and tightening environmental regulations are increasing demand for technologies that address per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as "forever chemicals." Hillwood has announced a strategic investment in Dallas-based Hexivon to help accelerate the deployment of water treatment systems designed to permanently destroy PFAS contaminants.
Hillwood's investment will help Hexivon expand the commercial deployment of its PFAS treatment platform across the United States.
The collaboration combines Hexivon's water treatment technology with Hillwood's experience in infrastructure development, project delivery and long-term capital investment. The companies plan to pursue opportunities with municipal utilities, industrial facilities, environmental remediation projects and government agencies.
According to Hexivon, its treatment platform is designed to destroy PFAS compounds at the molecular level rather than separating them from water and generating contaminated waste that requires disposal. The company said the technology has already been deployed in municipal drinking water systems, industrial wastewater facilities, landfills and environmental remediation projects.
The investment comes as utilities and public agencies increase spending on water treatment projects in response to evolving PFAS regulations.
In Texas, more than $1 billion has been appropriated to the Texas Water Development Board through House Bill 500 for eligible water supply and infrastructure improvements, including PFAS treatment initiatives. Hillwood also noted that 29 public water systems across the Dallas-Fort Worth region have exceeded U.S. Environmental Protection Agency PFAS standards, highlighting the need for additional treatment capacity.
For construction owners, utility contractors and water infrastructure developers, continued investment in PFAS treatment technologies is expected to create opportunities for water treatment plant upgrades, environmental remediation projects and municipal infrastructure improvements. Partnerships between infrastructure investors and technology developers can also accelerate deployment of advanced treatment systems as utilities work to meet evolving regulatory requirements.
