Construction is set to begin April 13 on a major interstate improvement project along Interstate 29 near Hillsboro, North Dakota, aimed at enhancing roadway conditions and adding pedestrian infrastructure.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation announced that the project will focus on northbound I-29 between mile markers 101 and 111, covering a stretch from approximately three miles south of Hillsboro to north of the Mayville/ND 200 interchange.
The work is expected to continue through the fall construction season, with traffic adjustments and restrictions in place throughout the duration of the project.
To accommodate construction activity, traffic on I-29 will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Both northbound and southbound traffic will be routed onto the southbound lanes during the initial phase of the project.
Officials noted that the changes are necessary to maintain traffic flow while ensuring worker safety and allowing crews to complete reconstruction work efficiently.
“The North Dakota Department of Transportation would like to remind motorists to slow down and use caution throughout the work zone,” the agency stated.
Additional restrictions will include a reduced speed limit of 65 mph and a 12-foot width limit for vehicles traveling through the construction zone. These measures are intended to minimize risks and improve safety for both drivers and construction personnel.
Beginning in July, the project will shift to include work on overpasses at Hillsboro and the Mayville exit. During this phase, traffic on the overpasses will be reduced to a single lane and controlled by traffic signals.
The phased approach allows crews to address multiple components of the project, including roadway reconstruction and the addition of a pedestrian bridge, while minimizing disruptions to traffic as much as possible.

The pedestrian bridge component is expected to improve connectivity and safety for non-vehicular traffic in the area, supporting broader transportation infrastructure goals.
Transportation officials are encouraging drivers to stay informed about road conditions and construction updates throughout the project. Motorists can access real-time information by calling 511 or visiting the state’s online road condition map.
The I-29 project reflects ongoing efforts to maintain and modernize critical transportation corridors across North Dakota. As a key regional route, Interstate 29 plays an important role in supporting commerce, travel and local connectivity.
Officials emphasized that while construction may cause temporary inconvenience, the long-term improvements are expected to enhance safety and efficiency for all users of the corridor.
