Bridge preservation work in western South Dakota is advancing as state transportation officials prepare to begin repairs on the Cambell Street viaduct bridge in Rapid City. The project is intended to extend the service life of the existing structure while maintaining traffic flow on a key urban corridor.
J.V. Bailey Inc. of Rapid City was selected as the prime contractor for the $596,000 project, which will focus on restoring deteriorated sections of the bridge deck.
Preparatory work will begin July 20 with the temporary closure of the northbound St. Joseph Street ramp beneath the Cambell Street viaduct. The ramp is scheduled to reopen the following day before bridge deck repairs commence on July 29.
Construction crews will remove damaged concrete from the bridge deck and replace it with new material. Repairs will be completed in phases, allowing work to proceed on one half of the bridge at a time while maintaining traffic through the corridor.
Throughout construction, motorists will encounter one open lane in each direction and a temporary speed limit of 30 mph. Transportation officials expect intermittent delays, particularly during peak travel periods.
Bridge repair activities are scheduled to continue through late October 2026. The broader project, including final completion activities, is expected to conclude in May 2027.
The work is part of South Dakota's ongoing bridge preservation program, which emphasizes timely maintenance to improve roadway durability and postpone more extensive rehabilitation or replacement projects.
For construction owners and infrastructure contractors, the project reflects continued investment in preserving existing transportation assets through targeted maintenance contracts. Preventive bridge repairs help transportation agencies maximize the lifespan of critical infrastructure while creating opportunities for regional contractors specializing in bridge rehabilitation and roadway maintenance.
