Officials recently celebrated the topping-off of a new building as the final structural beam was lifted into place, marking significant progress on the facility’s multi-phase modernization effort. The ceremony brought together state officials, business leaders, long-time event partners and project team members.

During the traditional construction celebration, guests signed the final beam before it was raised into position — a symbolic moment recognizing the collaboration and work of thousands of construction professionals involved in the project.

$180M Phase I Expansion Adds Major Exhibit Facility

The topping-off ceremony marks an important step in Phase I of the project, which represents a $180 million investment in expanding the exhibition and event capabilities of the complex.

The centerpiece of the phase is a 350,000-square-foot multi-purpose building located on the northwest side of the property. The facility, roughly equivalent to six football fields, will become the largest Class “A” exhibit space at the convention center.

Designed by Schmidt Associates, the building is designed to support a wide range of uses including trade shows, livestock competitions, equestrian events, sporting tournaments and large conventions.

The facility will include specialized agricultural infrastructure such as washrooms, a milking parlor suite and flexible event configurations, allowing the space to host both traditional agricultural exhibitions and modern convention events.

Additional features include multiple entrances, food service areas and meeting spaces to accommodate large crowds and diverse event programming.

Major Investment in Kentucky’s Events and Tourism Industry

Project leaders say the expansion will strengthen the state’s ability to host major national and international events while continuing to support long-standing traditions held at the facility.

"[Due] to the continued investment of the Kentucky General Assembly, we are transforming a side of our property that has remained largely unchanged since the facility first opened in 1956," said David S. Beck. "The Kentucky Exposition Center is where Kentuckians come together. It's where youth show livestock, families mark annual traditions at the Kentucky State Fair, athletes compete on an international stage and the world's largest events call home. What we're building here will elevate every one of those experiences. We're deeply grateful to the thousands of tradespeople and partners who are making this expansion and renovation possible."

Officials say the project is expected to help attract larger trade shows, conventions and industry events to Kentucky while supporting tourism and local economic development.

Once both phases are complete, the complex is projected to become the fifth-largest convention center in the United States.

Thousands of Construction Workers Contribute to Project

The massive construction effort has brought together a large national project team.

According to project officials, up to 4,000 tradespeople have worked on the development, supported by a 150-member design team made up of engineers, architects and construction professionals from across Kentucky and the United States.

Construction on the new exhibit building is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with events beginning to utilize the space in 2027.

Phase II Will Add Additional Exhibit Space

The broader modernization plan includes a second phase valued at $213 million, which will focus on upgrading other sections of the convention complex.

Phase II will redevelop the West Wing, West Hall and Pavilion, adding additional Class “A” exhibit space, larger pre-function areas, new meeting rooms and enhanced food and beverage facilities.

Planning and utility work for Phase II has already begun, with major construction expected to start after Phase I is completed.

Together, the two phases represent one of the most significant infrastructure investments in Kentucky’s convention and tourism sector, positioning the Kentucky Exposition Center to compete for major events well into the future.
