Construction has officially begun on a new historical museum in Lake Stevens, marking a key step in preserving the community’s heritage while supporting a broader downtown development project.
The facility, which will house the Lake Stevens Historical Society, replaces the city’s former museum that was demolished in 2021 during redevelopment efforts connected to North Cove Park and surrounding downtown improvements.
City officials say the museum will be part of a new complex known as Mill Spur Yard, designed to provide both cultural and commercial space in the growing area.
The Mill Spur Yard development will include dedicated space for the historical museum along with two commercial suites, helping activate the area while preserving local history.
The project is funded through a combination of local funding and a grant from the Washington State Historical CSociety.
According to Community Development Director Russell Wright, the total project cost exceeds $4 million.
The redevelopment effort is part of the city’s long-term vision to enhance public spaces, expand cultural amenities and support economic activity in the downtown district.
While the city is responsible for the construction of the building, the Lake Stevens Historical Society will manage the museum’s interior design and exhibits.
To help fund exhibit development and displays, the organization has launched a fundraising effort and is encouraging community support.
“We are asking those who love our local history for help in raising the funds,” the post said. “We’d love for you to be part of preserving those stories which are unique to our community.”
The society began promoting the fundraising campaign earlier this year through social media in an effort to engage residents and history supporters.
The new museum will serve as a central location for preserving artifacts, photographs and stories that document the history of the Lake Stevens community and surrounding region.
Community leaders say the project represents both a cultural investment and an opportunity to reconnect residents with the area’s past.
Once completed, the museum will provide a permanent space for exhibitions while supporting educational programs and community events tied to local heritage.
Officials expect the Mill Spur Yard complex to become a focal point for visitors and residents interested in learning more about the history of the region while enjoying the revitalized downtown area.
