Expanding healthcare infrastructure remains a priority across Florida as providers work to address increasing patient demand and workforce shortages. At HCA Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee, a major expansion project is adding new patient care capacity while creating space to support healthcare education and future campus growth.
Layton Construction recently reached the structural topping out milestone for the hospital's new 72,184-square-foot horizontal expansion. The project is designed to increase clinical capacity with 42 medical-surgical patient rooms while also incorporating two classrooms dedicated to training future healthcare professionals.
The expansion includes renovations to the hospital's main entrance and lobby, additional materials management space, and central energy plant upgrades intended to accommodate future infrastructure demands. Structural foundations are also being constructed to support the addition of four future inpatient and outpatient floors as the campus expands over time.
In addition to the hospital tower, Layton Construction is completing a separate emergency department expansion on the campus.
The approximately 6,112-square-foot project is expected to increase the emergency department's size by 125%. Planned improvements include a new nurse station, 10 examination rooms, and an emergency department admissions area intended to improve patient intake and treatment capacity.
Construction activities are being performed while maintaining ongoing hospital operations, requiring extensive planning and coordination to minimize disruptions to patient care.
The hospital tower expansion is scheduled for completion in spring 2027, while the emergency department expansion is expected to finish during summer 2027.
Healthcare construction continues to be a significant market for contractors and project owners as hospitals expand capacity, modernize facilities, and invest in workforce development. Projects that combine patient care improvements, educational space, and infrastructure designed for future expansion can help owners phase long-term campus growth while limiting future disruptions and supporting evolving healthcare needs.
