Federal transportation funding continues to support state and local efforts to modernize aging infrastructure and improve mobility. Massachusetts has secured more than $26.5 million through the U.S. Department of Transportation's Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program to advance roadway improvements in Malden and Cape Cod.
The grants will finance projects focused on safety enhancements, congestion relief, multimodal accessibility, and transportation resilience.
The largest award, totaling $25 million, will support improvements along nearly three miles of Route 28 connecting Yarmouth and Barnstable.
The project includes upgrades designed to address high-crash locations, improve pedestrian and ADA accessibility, reduce traffic congestion, and strengthen a transportation corridor used by residents, businesses, freight operators, emergency responders, and visitors.
The Town of Yarmouth and the Cape Cod Commission will lead the project.
The City of Malden received nearly $1.6 million for planning and design work associated with reconstructing Broadway (Route 99).
Planned improvements include modernization of traffic signals, pedestrian safety enhancements, stormwater infrastructure upgrades, traffic flow improvements, and measures to increase roadway resilience while supporting future economic development along the corridor.
State agencies partnered with local governments to develop the successful BUILD grant applications and identify the required non-federal matching funds.
Federal BUILD grants remain an important source of funding for transportation infrastructure that may otherwise face delays. For construction owners, engineering firms, and contractors, these awards create future opportunities in roadway reconstruction, traffic management, stormwater improvements, and multimodal infrastructure while supporting long-term investment in Massachusetts' transportation network.
