HELENA, Mont. — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is seeking public input on a proposal to improve a key stretch of roadway along 11th Avenue and Prospect Avenue in Helena, a heavily traveled corridor that serves both local residents and visitors accessing the city’s east side.
The project would extend from the intersection with Montana Avenue east to Gibbon Street, near the Walmart Supercenter, a section that has seen steadily increasing traffic volumes in recent years.
According to MDT, construction is tentatively scheduled for 2027 or 2028, depending on the final design phase and funding availability.
The proposed upgrades include:
“The purpose of the project is to extend the service life of the roadway and improve accessibility in compliance with current Americans with Disabilities Act standards,” MDT officials said.
Transportation officials emphasized that pedestrian-focused improvements are a priority, as this section of 11th Avenue connects residential neighborhoods with retail, employment, and healthcare destinations. The addition of flashing crosswalk signals and ADA-compliant ramps is intended to make the corridor safer for children, seniors, and individuals with mobility challenges.
MDT has opened the comment process and is encouraging residents, business owners, and community stakeholders to share feedback. Comments may be submitted online or mailed in writing to the Montana Department of Transportation, Great Falls office, PO Box 1359, Great Falls, MT 59403-1359. All submissions should reference project UPN 10314000.
Officials said community feedback will play an important role in shaping the final design, especially for pedestrian features and accessibility improvements.
Once finalized, the 11th and Prospect Avenue upgrades are expected to improve travel reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and support long-term growth on Helena’s east side.
