BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The North Dakota Department of Transportation shared new details this week on ongoing improvements along Memorial Highway in Mandan, emphasizing continued progress as the project heads toward its next major traffic shift.

The reconstruction effort — aimed at improving safety, drainage, and long-term road durability — is now focused on finishing work at the 40th Avenue SE intersection and extending paving operations to the west. According to officials, concrete placement on 40th Avenue SE is already underway and additional pours are scheduled early next week.

Along Memorial Highway, construction crews are “working westward, laying gravel and getting driveways ready for the next round of concrete,” helping prepare the route for eventual two-way traffic restoration.

Significant underground work has also reached major completion points:

  • Sanitary & Water Lines: All sewer and water connections are now fully installed on the south side of the corridor.
  • Storm Sewer: The primary storm sewer line is expected to be fully completed by this weekend, improving drainage and reducing future flooding concerns.

In the meantime, cleanup efforts are underway to help the road base dry faster as colder weather settles in. “Crews are cleaning up the area to help the road dry out and get ready for shifting traffic once conditions improve,” the update noted.

Traffic Advisory: Ramp Closure Begins Nov. 1

Residents and commuters are being warned about a significant traffic change beginning Saturday, Nov. 1, as the eastbound I-194 exit ramp to Memorial Highway will temporarily close for roughly seven days. The closure is necessary to allow workers to install a new watermain and complete concrete paving near the 46th Avenue area.

Drivers should expect detours, slower travel times and could consider alternate routes when entering Mandan from I-194. Transportation officials are asking motorists to stay alert, watch for flaggers, and follow updated signage throughout the shifting work zones.

More Work Ahead

With core utility systems nearing completion, road paving will speed up in the coming weeks — weather permitting. The DOT says the project remains on track for significant progress through late fall, though final completion is expected next construction season.

The Memorial Highway improvements aim to enhance local access for homes and businesses, strengthen infrastructure, and create safer travel for thousands of motorists who use the roadway each day.

Nearby residents can expect ongoing dust control, periodic closures, and construction noise as the corridor continues to take shape into 2026, but the DOT says the results will be worth the temporary inconvenience.
