Modernization projects at major transportation hubs continue to focus on passenger experience, digital communication, and facility enhancements. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has completed a new digital infrastructure project designed to improve visitor engagement and support increased passenger volumes expected during upcoming global events.

Atrium Modernization Project

The centerpiece of the upgrade is a nearly 15-foot-diameter LED sphere installed within the airport's domestic terminal atrium. The structure serves as a digital communications platform capable of displaying airport information, public messaging, advertising content, and visual presentations in a prominent passenger gathering area.

The installation replaces the airport's clock tower, which had served as a recognizable feature within the terminal for more than three decades.

Construction Team and Project Delivery

Atlanta-based New South Construction led construction of the project, while Cleveland Electric performed electrical work. Capital Signs provided design and signage expertise for the installation.

The project carried a construction value of approximately $3.26 million and was completed as part of the airport's broader atrium revitalization initiative. According to publicly available project information, the work was funded without federal assistance.

The digital sphere incorporates full-motion display technology, ambient light sensing capabilities, and remote content management functionality.

Airport Infrastructure Investments Ahead of Global Events

Airports across the United States continue to invest in terminal improvements, digital wayfinding systems, and passenger engagement technologies as operators prepare for growing travel demand and major international events.

At Hartsfield-Jackson, the new installation is expected to support communication with travelers while helping accommodate additional visitors anticipated during FIFA World Cup activities in Atlanta.

What This Means For Construction Owners

For construction owners, contractors, and airport operators, the project highlights continued investment in aviation infrastructure beyond traditional airfield and terminal expansion work. Digital modernization projects increasingly require collaboration among specialty contractors, electrical teams, technology providers, and facility owners to enhance passenger experience while supporting long-term operational goals.
