Construction is underway on a new workforce development facility in Rochester that aims to strengthen regional employment training and improve access to career services. New York State has launched work on the $14.5 million RochesterWorks Downtown Career Center, a project designed to consolidate workforce resources and support employers seeking skilled talent.
The new facility will occupy approximately 24,000 square feet on the downtown campus of Monroe Community College. Once completed, the center will bring workforce agencies and employment services together in a single location, allowing job seekers to access career counseling, training programs, and supportive services through a centralized model.
The project is intended to improve coordination between workforce providers and employers while helping individuals pursue career pathways in high-demand industries.
RochesterWorks, the workforce development board serving Monroe County, expects to relocate operations to the new center when construction is completed in September 2027.
The total project carries a $14.5 million budget, including a $5.5 million contribution through New York's Regional Revitalization Partnership. The broader initiative combines public, philanthropic, and local government funding to advance economic development projects across Rochester, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls.
The Downtown Career Center will complement workforce initiatives already located on Monroe Community College's campus, including the Finger Lakes Workforce Development Center and the planned Finger Lakes ON-RAMP center. These programs focus on training workers for advanced manufacturing, semiconductor production, robotics, information technology, clean energy manufacturing, skilled trades, and related industries.
Workforce development facilities are becoming an increasingly important component of regional economic development strategies as states invest in advanced manufacturing and technology industries.
