Public investment in community facilities continues to support economic development and recreational infrastructure across New York. State officials have announced the opening of TheZone, a new indoor play and STEAM education facility at Northwest Arena in Jamestown, designed to expand year-round recreational opportunities while supporting local tourism and workforce growth.
The 6,200-square-foot facility combines physical activity with science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) learning experiences for children from toddlers through pre-teens.
The ADA-compliant venue includes an interactive sports entrance, open play area, toddler zone, accessible climbing structure, and educational spaces featuring activities related to nutrition, physics, and technology. The project was designed by Jack Rouse Associates and Cortina Productions.
Empire State Development provided a $900,000 capital grant through the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council to support development of the facility.
TheZone is projected to generate approximately 45,000 additional visitors each year and create four permanent full-time positions along with 10 part-time jobs. The facility is located near other visitor destinations in downtown Jamestown, contributing to broader community and tourism initiatives.
Community recreation and public facilities remain an important segment of civic infrastructure investment. For construction owners, developers, and public agencies, projects that combine education, accessibility, and recreational amenities can support local economic development, increase public asset utilization, and strengthen regional tourism.
