The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) has announced the start of construction for Anew Center, a family shelter in Jamestown, set to provide emergency shelter and services for individuals and families who have experienced homelessness. The $5.7 million project is funded, in part, by a $4.4 million grant from OTDA's Homeless Housing and Assistance Program.
When completed, Anew Center will serve as a vital emergency family shelter for survivors of domestic violence, providing families and children with a safe environment to heal and rebuild. The project’s funding also includes contributions from various organizations, such as $250,000 from Carnahan Jackson and the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, as well as funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“This shelter reflects our shared mission to create safer communities for individuals and families impacted by violence,” said Division of Criminal Justice Services Commissioner Rossana Rosado. Additionally, Office of Victim Services Director Bea Hanson emphasized the role of the project in helping survivors break free from abusive situations and begin their healing journey.
New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence Executive Director Kelli Nicholas Owens added, “The Anew Center offers a vital resource to survivors of domestic violence by providing a safe haven, ensuring individuals have the support they need to heal.”
New York State Office of Children and Family Services Commissioner Dr. DaMia Harris-Madden praised the collaboration between state agencies, ensuring a comprehensive support system for individuals and families facing crises.
Salvation Army County Coordinator Major John Merchant also expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “This shelter will be a beacon of hope, providing a safe foundation and the support needed to help individuals rebuild their lives.”
The Anew Center is part of Governor Hochul's $25 billion Housing Plan aimed at creating or preserving 100,000 affordable homes statewide, including those that offer support services for vulnerable populations. The Homeless Housing and Assistance Program plays a critical role in the creation and preservation of shelters like Anew Center, furthering the state's commitment to addressing homelessness and providing housing solutions.
