This construction segment — the second of three planned phases — focuses on Texas Avenue between University Drive and Highway 21. TxDOT expects work to continue through the spring of 2027 as contractors take on a wide scope of upgrades aimed at improving mobility, safety, and connectivity.

Changes underway include replacing traffic signals and installing new landscaping while also adding intelligent transportation system equipment that will enhance traffic monitoring and coordination at busy intersections. The technology upgrades are part of TxDOT’s statewide effort to introduce real-time traffic management tools in high-travel corridors.

The long-term project is designed to support the region’s rapid growth and increasing commuter traffic, particularly in areas surrounding Texas A&M University. In addition to signal and infrastructure modernization, TxDOT plans new shared-use paths to improve access for pedestrians, cyclists, and micro-mobility users.

Further enhancements include modified drainage infrastructure, curb improvements, additional safety lighting, and more traffic signals to reduce collision risks along the corridor.

TxDOT also plans pavement widening — known as “loons” — at specific intersections. The added pavement is intended to allow U-turn movements that were restricted when center medians were installed two years ago. Those medians have sparked ongoing conversation in Bryan and College Station about access and congestion.

While elected officials and some residents of Bryan have called for adjustments to those medians to restore more direct left-turn access into businesses, the TxDOT update to WTAW News did not mention removing any sections of the median as sought by Bryan citizens and the city council.

The agency anticipates launching the final third phase of work in fall 2028. That final stage is expected to complete the transformation of the corridor by tying together infrastructure upgrades from previous years and creating a more organized and efficient transportation route through Bryan.

The Texas Avenue project has been in planning and development for several years, with TxDOT emphasizing a long-term vision focused on reducing congestion and creating a safer travel environment for all users — drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit riders.
