SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Transportation will conduct overnight closures on Interstate 65 and US-31W this month as part of ongoing bridge construction work.

Crews will detour southbound traffic on Interstate 65 and close U.S. Route 31W in both directions for a bridge deck pour on the new I-65 bridge over US-31W. The closures are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, and will repeat Monday, March 9, and Wednesday, March 11.
During the closures, motorists traveling southbound on I-65 will be diverted off the interstate at Exit 98 and routed back onto the highway using the entrance ramp.
The work is part of TDOT’s I-65 Phase 3 Widening and Improvements project, which began construction in March 2025. The project includes adding one travel lane in each direction and replacing bridges over US-31W, Long Hollow Pike, East Cedar Street and Mansker Creek, along with additional roadway upgrades.
All construction activities are weather-dependent. TDOT reminds drivers to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds and follow Tennessee’s Move Over Law when traveling through work zones. Violations of the law can result in fines up to $500 and possible jail time.
Motorists can check real-time traffic conditions through TDOT’s SmartWay system or by calling 511 for travel updates.
